Bones' Big Hookup!

Talk about chemistry. In their four years as TV partners, Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz have turned romantic bantering into a time bomb of sexual tension. The result has made Bones an addictive treat: a procedural whodunit with humor and heart that drives fans to scream, “They’re so perfect for each other! Why don’t they realize it?” Now that forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan and FBI agent Seeley Booth are about to seal the deal in May, we brought the actors in for questioning. --by David A. What do you think about joining the ranks of TV couples—do you have favorites?
Deschanel: We’ve been compared to Moonlighting a lot, which is closer than, say, Cheers.
Boreanaz: I always liked Hot Lips Houlihan and Hawkeye on M*A*S*H.
Deschanel: I’d love to see Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock get together, and there’s Olivia Benson and Elliott Stabler on Law & Order: SVU. But they don’t need to be together; I’d still watch it.

The ratings for Bones keep going up. Do you worry that this is coming too soon?
Deschanel: It’s dangerous when you get two characters together—a lot of shows fizzle out when it happens—but then the audience really wants it. So you have to be creative. We’ve already kissed, even though Brennan was blackmailed into it, and we enjoyed it a little more than we’d like to admit. Once they get together, their relationship will only be stronger.
Boreanaz: We’re always put in situations where we have to live together and pretend we’re having sex, but the show revolves around how much they care for each other in tender and loving ways. Emily and I rehearse every weekend with our acting coach, Ivana Chubbuck, to keep things creative, and this next step is going to be fantastic. Everyone is so high on “Will they or won’t they get in bed together?” and they will, but how it’s going to be done has to be fulfilling for the audience, [as well as] surprising and smart. I assume it will not be your typical sex scene with the headboard pounding.
How would you like to see it unfold?
Deschanel: On a tropical island.
Boreanaz: [Laughs] Surrounded by tropical fruit. Where the ocean meets the sand, the water rushes over us, and we get it while the getting’s good.
